Call to Worship
Ephesians 1:3-14

1 - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
2 - who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
1 - just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world
2 - to be holy and blameless before him in love.
1 - He destined us for adoption
2 - adoption as his children
1 - his children through Jesus Christ,
2 - his children according to the good pleasure of his will,
1 - to the praise of his glorious grace
2 - his grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.
1 - In him we have redemption through his blood,
2 - In him we have the forgiveness of our trespasses,
1 - according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us.
2 - lavished?
1 - Yes, lavished on us.
2 - With all wisdom and insight he has made known to us
1 - the mystery of his will,
2 - according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ,
1 - as a plan for the fullness of time,
2 - a plan to gather up all things in him,
1 - gather up things in heaven and things on earth.
2 - In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance,
1 - having been destined according to the purpose
2 - the purpose of him who accomplishes all things
1 - accomplishes them according to his counsel and will,
2 - so that we,
1 - we who were the first to set our hope on Christ,
2 - we might live for the praise of his glory.
1 - In him you also,
2 - (you who weren’t among the first)
1 - when you had heard the word of truth,
2 - when you had heard the gospel of your salvation,
1 - and when you had believed in him,
2 - you were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit;
1 - (God’s promise which you can count on)
2 - you were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit;
1 - this is the pledge of our inheritance
2 - toward redemption as God's own people,
1 - to the praise of his glory.
2 - to the praise of his glory.... (pause)

1 - Stand, if you are able, and sing
2 - unite your voices in song
1 - sing to the praise of his glory
2 - #12 in your hymnal

Opening Prayer

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world,
         who destined us for adoption,
         who forgave us our trespasses,
who made known the mystery of the divine will,
who marked us with the seal of the Spirit.
Blessed be God's name!

Returning our Tithes and Offerings

The Psalmist says that everything on this big blue ball belongs to God - the earth and all its resources; the earth and all its creatures - us included. It all ... we all belong to God. Do you believe that? Next question, are you living as if that is so? Ponder what it means in your life to truly live that belief rather than merely speaking it.
It’s time now for the ushers come forward and receive from us what really belongs to God.

Dedication

It sometimes pulls us up short, Lord, to realize that everything belongs to you. We are caretakers of what you have created. And yet, we are also your children in Christ, with a rich inheritance through him. Grant us the wisdom and the courage we need to make that inheritance into a blessing rather than a curse. In your name we pray. Amen.

Pastoral Prayer

Communion Prayer

part one

Leader:  Blessed are you, O God.
You made bread to strengthen us.
                    You set aside this bread
as a sign of your Son's broken body.
In breaking it, may we participate
                      in the reconciliation of Christ.
People:  May Christ's body be the bread of our souls,
to give us strength to continue our pilgrimage,
being made worthy to sit with all the redeemed
at the marriage feast of the Lamb.
ALL:     Hear us, O God, through our mediator, Jesus Christ. AMEN

part two

Leader:  Blessed are you, O God.
You made the vine to strengthen us.
                    You set aside this cup
as a sign of your Son's shed blood.
                In drinking the cup,
may we participate in the blood of Christ.
People:  May Christ's blood make us strong
to drink the cup of suffering
                          without complaint, for Jesus' sake,
in the hope that we shall drink new wine
                          in your kingdom.
ALL:  Hear us, O God, for the sake of your eternal love. AMEN

Benediction

Eternal Lord,
as we leave this place of worship and communion,
may we go, knowing that you never leave or forsake us.
Help us to go with the song of faith in our hearts,
the peace of Christ in our lives,
the protection of the Spirit beside us,
and the security of your presence beneath us. AMEN
