Call to Worship
Isaiah 55:6-11

1 - Seek the Lord while he may be found,

2 - call upon him while he is near;

1 - let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts;

2 - let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

1 - For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord.

2 - For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways

1 - and my thoughts than your thoughts.

2 - For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven,

1 - and do not return there until they have watered the earth,

2 - making it bring forth and sprout,

1 - giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,

2 - so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;

1 - it shall not return to me empty,

2 - but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,

1 - and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

(pause)

1 - Rise in body or in spirit and sing, “We plow the fields and scatter the good seed on the land, but it is fed and watered by God’s almighty hand,” #96 in your hymnal.

Opening Prayer

            Lord, let me hunger enough that I not forget the world’s hunger. Lord, let me hunger enough that I may have bread to share. Lord, let me hunger enough that I may long for the Bread of Heaven. Lord, let me hunger enough that I may be filled.
            But, O Lord, let me not hunger so much that I seek after that which is not bread, nor try to live by bread alone. Amen.

For Children
" The seed, God’s special message"

            This is the second of several scripture stories this summer in our mini-Vacation Bible School for children. Each week they will come forward with Ed Lewis, then head off for crafts, snacks, and fun based upon the Bible story for the day.

Affirmation of faith

I believe in God,
        the giver of grain and bread,
    and in Jesus Christ,
         the bread of life broken for us,
    and in the Holy Spirit,
        God's nourishing power in every grain and loaf.
I believe that Christ is to be leaven in us,
     so that we may offer the bread of life
     to the hungers of every human heart.

Pastoral Prayer

written closer to the time (if not at the moment)

Returning our Tithes and Offerings

            We are "perishable goods," Lord God. These bodies you have provided have an expiration date. And yet you have planted within us a living and enduring word. May our giving be a genuine outgrowth of your love, as the imperishable seed of your good news breaks through the surface and our lives become your garden. Amen.

Ushers, please gather in what we have to share.

Benediction
