Reign of Christ Sunday
“Grace
to you and peace … from Jesus Christ, the faithful
witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the
kings of the earth.”
(Revelation 1:4-5)
Grace to you and peace
from him who is and
who was and
who is to come, and
from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5and
from Jesus Christ,
the faithful witness,
the firstborn of the dead, and
the ruler of the kings of the earth.
To him who loves us and
freed us from our sins by
his blood, 6and
made us to be a kingdom,
priests serving
his God and Father,
to him be glory and dominion
forever and
ever. Amen. 7Look! He is coming with the clouds;
every eye will see him,
even those who pierced him;
and on his account
all the tribes of the earth will wail.
So it is to be. Amen. 8“I am the Alpha and the Omega,”
says the Lord God, who is and
who was and
who is to come,
the Almighty.
Opening
Prayer
Let our worship, loving God, reach up as tall as the humility of
our King, and bend down as deep as his glory. Keep us hushed in
a stable, grateful among sinners, overawed as our feet are
washed, adoring beneath a cross, and jubilant outside an empty
tomb. With his Spirit endowing us, may we serve you boldly,
effectively and merrily. To the glory of your name, and the extension
of his kingdom.Amen!
A Children's Book by
Dorothy Brandt Davis, illustrated by her son Carl, which
tells the story of John Naas. This "tall man," who was part of
the "Brethren" movement in Germany in the early 1700's, later
emigrating to America. According to tradition, he was captured
and tortured to force his enlistment in an elite regiment of the
Prussian army. He refused because he already had a captain, the
Prince Immanuel. Various versions of this tale abound. In "The
Tall Man," his height would have made him a good bodyguard for a
king but, as he told the king (according to this book), "I
cannot. Years ago I became a preacher - a soldier for God and
Jesus, my King and my Lord." He was released. The words to the
hymn
"Savior of my soul"
are attributed to John Naas.
Pastoral Prayer
written closer to the time (if not at the
moment)
"Not cut
out for religion"
Jude
Simpson is young British “stand up poet” with a “unique
blend of observational comedy, witty wordplay, poetry, rap and
song.” She also happens to be a Christian. She writes a regular
column for
Third Way magazine, a publication which provides
Christian comment on culture that is socially responsible and
speaks of alternatives in the United Kingdom. The following is
not-so-much a critique of Jesus as it is an exposé of our own
desires for a trouble-free faith. Listen….
When
it comes to our “King” Jesus, do we want an easy-to-follow leader?
Chew on that question as you return your offering…
Ushers?
