(adapted from Zechariah 9:9 and Mark 11:9-10)

Men:  Glory to God in the highest!

   Women:  Shout, children of Jerusalem!

Voice 1:  Look! Your king will come to you.

Voice 2:  He is righteous and victorious.

Voice 3:  He is humble and riding on a colt.

Voice 4:  Blessed is the one who comes in the Lord’s name!

All voices:  Hosanna! Blessed is God’s coming kingdom.

Congregation: Hosanna in the highest!

Unison Invocation

Loving Christ, we come this day shouting hosannas, and yet we must also cry, "Save us, Lord!" After the shouting has died down, grant us holy moments within this passionate week ahead. Give us time to ponder our shortcomings, to ask for forgiveness, and to be grateful for your love and sacrifice. Help us not to forget the darkness and pain that are to come. Amen.

For Children
Pilgrim People Time

Listen to this children's message (mp3)

which includes:

Psalm 118:19-29 (pew Bible p. 531)

 and

“Hosanna”

Returning our Tithes and Offerings

It was a different sort of pilgrimage which led the children of Israel back home from their forced exile in Babylon. They returned to a city much changed. There was no Temple. There were no walls. It had all been destroyed years earlier. But they set themselves to the task of rebuilding, under the leadership of Ezra and Nehemiah. Finally the time came to dedicate the rebuilding, and in the process they re-dedicated themselves, making promises to God. Here is one of the promises they made: “We obligate ourselves to bring the first fruits of our soil and the first fruits of all fruit of every tree, year by year, to the house of the LORD.” (Nehemiah 10:35)

On our journey toward Easter, we are pilgrims also. The time has come to fulfill our promises. Let’s bring to the Lord our first fruits. Ushers, would you assist us in doing so?

Pastoral Prayer

written closer to the time (if not at the moment)

Unison Benediction

Mysterious Presence, we have shouted our hosannas, with the joyful waving of palm branches, and now suddenly we face the reality of the passion of Jesus that will follow. As we leave this place of worship, prepare us for the shadows and darkness that we will face as we walk with you to Calvary. Above all, help us believe that the darkness will turn to dawn! Amen.
